Care Assistant job description

Post Title:

HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT

Accountable to:

REGISTERED MANAGER/DEPUTY MANAGER/TEAM LEADER

Main Purpose of Job:

To assist the Team Leaders in providing care for the residents who require additional attention to their nursing care, thus maintaining an environment in which residents receive the highest standards of care. To assist by performing a wide range of duties for which formal nurse training is not required to ensure the smooth running of the home.

Functions:

Assist Team Leaders with the care of the residents in the homes.

Liaising closely with the Team Leaders on all matters affecting residents care and the seeking of advice as required.

Undertaking under the supervision of the Team Leaders basic resident care including:

  1. Manual handling, and positioning ambulant and non-ambulant residents using the correct techniques
  2. Assisting the residents with personal hygiene, including bathing, and washing.
  3. Bed making.
  4. Preventative care and the treatment of pressure areas.
  5. Assisting with the dressing and undressing of residents according to physical ability.
  6. Observing and reporting upon the resident's condition.

Assisting with collection of observations including taking of temperature, pulse, and respiration.

Assisting with the collection and observation of specimens and routine tests of urine.

Provide assistance to the Team Leaders as the situation warrants throughout the Home.

As a member of the team, wearing a uniform with pride, paying attention to hair being worn off the collar and no wearing of jewellery (except for a wedding ring).

Other Duties:

· Maintaining records of resident's activities of daily living and providing assistance wherever necessary.

· Attending in-service training programmes at the request of the Manager.

· Establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other members of the care team.

· Maintaining equipment in good serviceable order, keeping it clean and stored appropriately.

· Ensuring an adequate top up of supplies in area of need, i.e. incontinence aids, pads etc.

· Ensuring that economical use is made of equipment and materials, and monitoring use as required.

· Rough cleaning and spot cleaning of spillages of faeces, urine, vomit and other personal spillages particularly substances that are prone to causing stains.

Policy Implementation

  • Assist in ensuring that all agreed policies are implemented.
  • Take reasonable care to prevent injury to self and others in the work situation in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Ensuring that every precaution is taken to safeguards the property and valuables of the residents.
  • Reporting all unusual incidents and accidents to the nurse in charge or the Manager.
