Job description

Senior Youth Worker, Employability and Enterprise

Create and lead a new employability and enterprise programme from the ground up. You'll help young people who've lost confidence or feel unsure about their future take a step they can be proud of, whether that's applying for an apprenticeship, walking into their first interview or pitching a business idea of their own.

Position: Senior Youth Worker, Employability and Enterprise
Salary: £31,000 to £33,000 per annum, depending on experience
Location: Edgware, London
Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week, including regular evenings and around one weekend session a month
Contract: One year fixed term. Funding is in place for the first year, and the charity aims to extend the role if funding is renewed.

About the role

A major priority is launching a daytime programme for young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), or who are at risk of becoming NEET. Through one-to-one appointments and small-group sessions, you'll help participants work through what's holding them back and agree practical steps towards their goals.

You'll also shape a wider programme with young people aged 13 to 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs. For 13 to 15-year-olds, that means making enterprise something they can try for themselves. A team might choose a business idea, work out what it would cost, test it and pitch it to a local employer. Along the way, they'll practise making decisions, solving problems and speaking up for their ideas.

You'll spend around 22.5 hours a week working directly with participants. Alongside this, you'll:

  • Plan a year of activities, from informal careers drop-ins and interview practice to workshops on what to do after GCSEs or A levels.
  • Set up referral routes with schools, youth workers and local services so those who need more support can access it.
  • Bring employers on board to offer work experience, mentoring and workplace visits.
  • Track what participants achieve and use their feedback to improve the programme.
  • Take responsibility for wider youth sessions as Session Lead or Duty Manager when needed, and respond to concerns as a Senior Safeguarding Practitioner.

About you

You'll bring substantial youth work experience, a track record of leading activities and managing projects and budgets, and a strong understanding of pathways into education, employment and training.

You'll be comfortable taking the initiative and getting others involved. You might turn an initial conversation with an employer into a work placement, adapt a session when it isn't connecting, or find a way to engage someone who wouldn't usually ask for careers support. You'll bring sound safeguarding judgement and an inclusive approach that gives young people a say in the support they receive.

About the organisation

You'll join a youth charity in Edgware that gives young people a safe, welcoming place to try new activities, build confidence and get support from trusted adults. An enhanced DBS check is required.

Other roles you may have experience of could include Senior Youth Worker, Youth Employability Lead, Youth Programme Lead, NEET Programme Coordinator, Youth Employment Adviser or Employability Officer.
